Animate: Bible Series, April 19–May 31

You are invited to try out a brand new opportunity for adults and youth! Come together for food, fellowship, and a fresh approach to faith. Starting the Wednesday after Easter, April 19, we will gather for seven weeks from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in Creekside Center for no-cost dinner and fellowship, watch a short video from the Animate: Bible series, and then engage in discussions around our tables about the Bible.

Through short, creative videos featuring current Christian thought leaders, we will explore the history of the Bible’s sacred texts and what they offer for us today. (You can watch a trailer here.) The series offers centrist Protestant theology, and it focuses more on asking questions for viewers to engage with than on giving all the answers. The video segments feature Eric Elnes, Phyllis Tickle, Rachel Held Evans, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Jose Morales, Will Willimon, and Jay Bakker. Participants are invited to sketch, doodle, and create in the provided journals, then share their thoughts.

Come be part of the fun, and invite your friends! Each session stands alone, so you don’t have to commit to all seven. The GroupLife planning team wants to plan how much dinner to provide, how many journals to purchase, and how many childcare staff to schedule, so please register if you plan to attend.

New Pastor Sam Starts July 1

Sam LewisThe LAUMC Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce the upcoming appointment of Pastor Samantha (Sam) Lewis to the pastoral team. She will serve as our minister of young adults, and like Pastor Samuel Yun, she will be in ministry with our whole church in many ways beyond the OpenCircle young adult group.

Pastor Sam is originally from Fresno and is proud to say that she is a lifelong SF Giants fan, despite having lived, trained, and most recently worked in the southeast. Pastor Sam likes to say that her fierce passion for the Giants is only exceeded by her passion for Jesus! She has a B.A. from Huntingdon College in Alabama and a Master of Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta.

Pastor Sam was previously pastor at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, and most recently associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Crestview, Florida. In addition to working across many dimensions of ministry—worship, congregational care, community outreach, and more—she also led young adult ministries and small groups as an intern at the Georgia Tech Wesley Foundation. In her free time, Pastor Sam enjoys playing stand-up bass, sometimes bass guitar, and enjoys fun ministry opportunities as “Reverend Slam” in the local roller derby league.

We are delighted for Pastor Sam to join the LAUMC community on July 1 and welcome her collaboration and leadership in our OpenCircle young adult ministry and broader church life.

Saying Farewell to Pastor Sam, May 22

OpenCircle worship Pastor SamPastor Sam Yun has served at LAUMC as the minister of young adults since 2011, leading OpenCircle young adult ministry as well as serving our church in many other ways. For the last year, he has been appointed here half-time as he also worked to start a new church in the East Bay, called EMBRACE CHURCH. Soon he will transition to serve EMBRACE full-time, and his last Sunday at LAUMC will be May 22. He will give the message at all four worship services that day.

We are all invited to an All-Church Family Dinner in his honor that evening in Creekside at 6:15pm, featuring a delicious Korean barbecue feast. To help Chef Fred Mayo with meal planning, please RSVP for the dinner. Donations will be accepted to offset the cost of the dinner. Following the dinner, the OpenCircle young adults invite us to stay for a brief celebration of Pastor Sam’s years of ministry with us.

If you would like to make a financial gift to Pastor Sam, please write a check payable to Samuel Yun and put it in the Sunday offering or bring it to the church office. Pastor Sam will be told the names of givers but not individual gift amounts. If you would like it to be part of a gift shared with him at the farewell dinner and celebration, please deliver it by Wednesday, May 18. Otherwise, checks may be sent through May 31 to be included in the final total.
