All-Church Dinner With Rev. Brian Adkins, Oct. 22

The United Methodist Church is in the middle of deliberations on whether and how it can proceed as a unified denomination, in light of its intractable division over full inclusion of LGBTQ persons. The Commission on a Way Forward is about halfway through its work. A young pastor from our California-Nevada Conference, the Rev. Brian Adkins, is a member of that Commission. He’s the only “out” gay clergy in that group of 32 lay and clergy members. His story of his experience—of the relationships that are forming across what seemed like hard dividing lines, and of how his hope for the Church is changing—is powerful and moving.

Pastor Brian will join us for our October All-Church Dinner on Sunday, October 22, at 6:15pm in Creekside and be in conversation with us about the work of the Commission and his experiences with that group. Everyone is invited to the Creekside Crossings service at 5:00pm and the dinner that follows.

Dinner is $12 for adults, $8 for children 10–17, and free for children under 10. You can pay in advance or at the door, but we ask that in either case you RSVP online for food and childcare planning purposes.

Reboot Sunday All-Church Dinner, Sept. 10

Come to the Creekside Crossings service on Sunday, September 10, at 5:00pm in Creekside and stay for an All-Church Sunday Dinner at 6:15pm, with our new District Superintendent Shinya Goto as our special guest. He will lead a “fishbowl” conversation with our ministry team leaders about their hopes and dreams for their work here at Los Altos UMC.

The dinner menu includes French onion bruschetta, lemon chicken piccata, Brazilian rice pilaf, green bean and sweet potato medley, salad, and blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. We have updated the pricing to better reflect the cost to the church to put on All-Church Dinners. Dinner is $15 for adults, $10 for children 10–17, and free for children under 10. Children will have a separate program during the panel conversation. You can pay in advance or at the door, but we ask that in either case you RSVP online by September 5 for food and childcare planning purposes. All are invited!

Note: Registration has been extended. Please register if you plan to come!

Family Fun Nights Aug. 8 & 15

Families are invited to enjoy some summer fun together! On two Tuesdays, August 8 and 15, bring your dinner and a picnic blanket, and join us from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on the grassy area by the Youth Room and Resource Center. Invite your friends and neighbors to experience how welcoming our church family can be! This is a great way to meet and get to know other families in our community, as well as the new director of Children’s Ministries. Please note: Parents are responsible for supervising their children at all times during this event, and all items brought in must be taken home at the end of the evening.

All-Church Dinner: Welcome New Pastors, July 9

Come to the Creekside Crossings service on July 9 at 5:00pm and stay for the All-Church Sunday Dinner (starts approximately at 5:45pm) to welcome our incoming ministers. Senior Pastor Kathi McShane will give the message at the service, and then she and Associate Pastor Jon Visitacion will be available to meet the congregation and share fellowship time. Please register for planning purposes.

Animate: Bible Series, April 19–May 31

You are invited to try out a brand new opportunity for adults and youth! Come together for food, fellowship, and a fresh approach to faith. Starting the Wednesday after Easter, April 19, we will gather for seven weeks from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in Creekside Center for no-cost dinner and fellowship, watch a short video from the Animate: Bible series, and then engage in discussions around our tables about the Bible.

Through short, creative videos featuring current Christian thought leaders, we will explore the history of the Bible’s sacred texts and what they offer for us today. (You can watch a trailer here.) The series offers centrist Protestant theology, and it focuses more on asking questions for viewers to engage with than on giving all the answers. The video segments feature Eric Elnes, Phyllis Tickle, Rachel Held Evans, Nadia Bolz-Weber, Jose Morales, Will Willimon, and Jay Bakker. Participants are invited to sketch, doodle, and create in the provided journals, then share their thoughts.

Come be part of the fun, and invite your friends! Each session stands alone, so you don’t have to commit to all seven. The GroupLife planning team wants to plan how much dinner to provide, how many journals to purchase, and how many childcare staff to schedule, so please register if you plan to attend.

Saying Farewell to Pastor Sam, May 22

OpenCircle worship Pastor SamPastor Sam Yun has served at LAUMC as the minister of young adults since 2011, leading OpenCircle young adult ministry as well as serving our church in many other ways. For the last year, he has been appointed here half-time as he also worked to start a new church in the East Bay, called EMBRACE CHURCH. Soon he will transition to serve EMBRACE full-time, and his last Sunday at LAUMC will be May 22. He will give the message at all four worship services that day.

We are all invited to an All-Church Family Dinner in his honor that evening in Creekside at 6:15pm, featuring a delicious Korean barbecue feast. To help Chef Fred Mayo with meal planning, please RSVP for the dinner. Donations will be accepted to offset the cost of the dinner. Following the dinner, the OpenCircle young adults invite us to stay for a brief celebration of Pastor Sam’s years of ministry with us.

If you would like to make a financial gift to Pastor Sam, please write a check payable to Samuel Yun and put it in the Sunday offering or bring it to the church office. Pastor Sam will be told the names of givers but not individual gift amounts. If you would like it to be part of a gift shared with him at the farewell dinner and celebration, please deliver it by Wednesday, May 18. Otherwise, checks may be sent through May 31 to be included in the final total.
