Building a Caring Congregation

The Rev. Karen Lampe, executive pastor of congregational care at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection (COR) in Kansas, says that “congregational care is not just caring for people in a church. It’s also people in the church providing care.” Do you feel called to the ministry of congregational care, either here at Los Altos UMC or wherever you call your spiritual home?

LAUMC is working to establish a group of people who will be available to provide care in the form of emotional and spiritual support to the congregation. As one step in that process, it is offering a training weekend for people interested in becoming lay Care Ministers. The training is open to anyone in the community as well as our own church congregation.

Rev. Lampe is coming to LAUMC to lead the training. She and her team developed this training based on her program at Church of the Resurrection. Rev. Lampe has written two books on “The Caring Congregation” and led many workshops and seminars on the topic. Attendees of this two-day program will receive a copy of her recently published second book, “The Caring Congregation: Training Manual and Resource Guide.”

The two-day training seminar will be held at Los Altos United Methodist Church, October 10 and 11, 8:30am – 5:00pm in Creekside Center. The cost of the program is $100 per person, which includes meals and materials. Several partial scholarships are available.
