On January 10, volunteers from LAUMC as well as other local churches in the Habitat for Humanity All Faiths group began the demolition efforts on a “gut and rebuild” home in San Jose. Weekend efforts were coordinated over the past few months, including LAUMC volunteers, culminating in the dedication ceremony on May 1. The Palm Street, San Jose, home went from being the blight of the neighborhood to a sparkling new home in just 4.5 months. During the emotional dedication, the family members were given a hammer in recognition of their ‘sweat equity’ efforts, a Bible, and the symbolic key to their new home, prompting the husband to fall to his knee in gratitude. It was a joyous day recognizing another successful build and the celebration of a deserving family’s new home.
