Music of the Civil Rights Movement led by Abraham Kenner III
Some of the songs of the Civil Rights Movement are well-known and sung in churches every Sunday and are in our own UM hymnal. Yet, there are many largely unknown songs, often sung by the people suffering the most at that time, that are not well known. In this class we will learn and sing a wide variety of songs that empowered this important movement and the stories behind them.
The Rabbinic Approach to the Bible led by Pastor Dave & Pastor Jeong
The movement Jesus began is rooted in a distinctive Rabbinic way of engaging Scripture—one that emphasizes Socratic questioning, respect for evidence, and the value of decentralized, conversation-driven communities rather than echo chambers that demand rigid uniformity. This approach prizes dialogue, humility, and an openness to learning. Unfortunately, the Rabbinic spirit that shaped early Christian practice has been sidelined in much of contemporary Christianity, contributing to forms of faith that are disconnected from Jesus’ teaching—at times marked by extremism, authoritarianism, and a rejection of both empathy and scientific inquiry. This class will recover and explore the Rabbinic methods of reading the Bible and consider how they might renew our communal life today.

So What Now? led by the Bold Service & Social Justice Team
In August, more than 50 gathered and shared the Social Justice issues that matter to them the most in a workshop entitled: “What Now?” This class will take the passionate issues that surfaced in that workshop: the treatment of immigrants; the preservation of democracy; homelessness, and others — and provide a time to gather with persons that share a similar passion and surface creative ways to respond.
