All services on Sunday, January 27, will focus on Africa and education. Bishop Minerva Carcaño will be our guest preacher for the morning services. She is a member of the Board of Africa University in Zimbabwe. Don’t miss this special Sunday!
In 2005 a simple birthday greeting connected a member of LAUMC’s United Methodist Women with Loice from Zimbabwe, who was studying at Michigan State University. Loice had a couple of years left to complete her economics degree, and she was struggling to find a way to continue her education in the United States once her scholarship funding ended. Our UMW responded by gathering enough funds to support the remainder of her education. That was the spark that led to our special African Student Education Fund and our yearly focus on Africa. We strive to promote awareness of the overwhelming hardships of our African siblings, with a focus on education for African women.
Over these past years we have supported over 60 young women, most of them for three or four years until they graduate. Our current goal is 10 students per year, supported at half tuition. A special collection at all services will benefit the African Student Education Fund. To give, you may donate online, text AFRICA and your donation amount to 650-229-5200, or make checks payable to LAUMC with “African Education Fund” on the memo line.
In addition, we have an opportunity to shop at the United Methodist Women’s annual fund-raiser for the African Student Education Fund! Sale-Abration is open on January 27 and February 3, 9:00am–1:00pm in the Children’s Center. Find unique gift items, delicious sweets and snacks for Super Bowl, beautiful floral arrangements for your Valentine or other occasions, and more. All proceeds will be used to fund scholarships for African women at Africa University.
